Please don't use our loft for storage - here's why

It might seem like your loft is just empty space, but how it’s used can really affect your safety, your home, and even your energy bills.

We know it can be tempting to use your loft as extra storage space. But in most homes, lofts aren’t designed to be used this way.

Keeping the loft clear helps keep your home safe, warm, and in good condition.

Here's why it matters

It can damage your home

Lofts in most homes aren’t built to hold heavy items like furniture, boxes, or suitcases.

  • Too much weight can cause damage: Storing items up there can put pressure on the ceiling below, leading to cracks or even serious structural problems.
  • Insulation gets squashed: The soft material in the loft (insulation) helps keep your home warm. Walking on it or storing things on top flattens it, making it less effective and increasing the chance of damp and cold spots.
  • Changes like adding wiring, pipes, or vents can lead to water damage, fire risks, or structural issues.
It can increase fire risk

Using your loft for storage can increase the risk of a fire  and make them more dangerous.

  • Stored items can fuel a fire: Things like cardboard boxes and fabrics can help flames spread much faster.
  • DIY electrics are unsafe: Trying to install lighting or power in the loft yourself can lead to electrical fires.
  • Fire protection can be affected: Lofts help stop fire spreading between homes. Using or changing the space can damage this protection.
There's a risk of injury

Lofts aren’t designed for regular access.

  • Using ladders or makeshift ways to get in and out can lead to falls and injuries.
  • It’s simply not a safe space to be using regularly.
It can affect how well your insulation works, increasing your energy costs

A well-insulated, undisturbed loft plays a big role in keeping your home warm and energy efficient.

  • Less heat loss: Avoiding access to the loft helps warmth in and keeps insulation intact, so it continues to trap heat effectively.
  • Lower energy costs: When insulation is working as it should, your home stays warmer for longer—helping to reduce heating bills over time.
